“Bring it On” at the Globe Theatre in Regina is a high energy, high flying and high aiming show that generally hits its target. The musical, while sharing plot elements from the movie of the same name, takes it’s own path on how the two highschools interact and rich girl Campbell has a new path to follow. With music and lyrics co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show has a hip-hop flair where Miranda’s styling is clearly evident.
The main character of the show, Campbell, is played by Berkley Silverman who does an admirable job of leading the cast. The other leading character, Danielle, is played by Chariz Faulmino. Chariz was an absolute standout in the show, in acting, dancing and singing. She entirely stole the stage any time she had an entrance, even selling burgers. Another standout role was La Cienega played with exuberance and flair by Nestor Lozano Jr. It’s refreshing to see a show with a trans character played by a trans actor where they are allowed to just exist in their role and as part of the cast.
The remainder of the cast is also excellent and maintains a high level of energy throughout the show with the challenging choreography. The choreography is well put together and there were only a few moments where the actors seemed to lose sync with one another, something which I’m sure will smooth out during the run. There were a few times where I found lyrics and spoken dialogue difficult to understand and that could have been diction or microphones. There was one instance where a character’s voice is changed to a demonic sounding growl which was also impossible to understand.
The band did an excellent job keeping up with the constant demands of the show. Lighting choices were good and although there was a scene or two that felt somewhat underlit, the lighting was just right to suggest a bedroom or a school gymnasium.
Overall, the show is an enjoyable evening with lots of laughs and is very entertaining. Is it worth the 100 dollars a ticket? That’s hard to say. If you have the money in the budget, then yes, it’s a good evening of musical theatre. 4 stars out of 5.
